Up and Running With WordPress 5.x

Today, I am declaring victory after recreating my site using WordPress 5.1.1! I have been doing a lot of under-the-hood work, setting up my new WordPress site (my first one). I believe that I have a complete set of plugins and server settings to declare that my site is live. Of course, I will still continue tweaking and working under-the-hood, but I hope to start adding some real content as time permits.

My active plugins include Akismet Anti-Spam (a must have), Contact Form 7, Google XML Sitemaps, GeneratePress Premium, Imagify, Two Factor Authentication, WP OPcache, and WP Rocket. These seem to be a good basic set of plugins to start with. I am sure that I will add others over time, but I am trying to make sure that I keep the number of installed plugins to a minimum. Please let me know about any plugins that you find to be very useful.

All of this is hosted on a very basic shared host at pair Networks. I like pair Networks because they provide ssh access to my server, and I can use my Linux/Unix skills to manage my site, including using wp-cli. I am using their Shared Hosting Package 1 for $5.95/month. It’s easy to upgrade if I ever need to. But this package is great for learning WordPress. If you would like to signup with pair Networks, please contact me for a referral code. The current offer is 20% off hosting fees for your first full billing term that you select.

I will write more about the details of my site setup as time goes on, including “how-to’s” about what I have learned. Please stay tuned …
